Your pharmacist may not know that leading endocrinologists recommend you should start on and stay on the same thyroid medication—so he or she may suggest an alternative to Levoxyl^®. To make sure you're getting the medication you've been prescribed, be prepared to have an informed discussion with your pharmacist.

“Did you contact my doctor for his/her approval?”

“Will I need to have my TSH levels retested?”

“Will I need to go to my doctor for the retest?”

“How much would I pay for Levoxyl^® tablets if I pay cash vs. paying the insurance co-pay?”

“If my doctor allows, would I save money by getting 100 Levoxyl^® tablets and paying cash?”

WARNING: Thyroid Hormones, including Levoxyl^®, either alone or together with other therapeutic agents, should not be used for the treatment of obesity or for weight loss. In patients with a normal functioning thyroid gland, doses within the range of daily hormonal requirements are ineffective for weight reduction. Larger doses may provide serious or even life-threatening manifestations of toxicity, particularly when given in association with sympathomimetic based weight loss drugs.

Levoxyl^® is indicated for thyroid hormone replacement or supplemental therapy for hypothyroidism. Levoxyl^® is contraindicated in patients with untreated thyrotoxicosis, acute myocardial infarction, uncorrected adrenal insufficiency, or hypersensitivity to any of its inactive ingredients. Adverse reactions are primarily those of hyperthyroidism due to therapeutic overdose. Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease.
